A return to school...

Back to school and grades/feedback tutorials... well it was yesterday, today I'm at home having received a call from the landlord saying they are eventually sending someone around to look at our noisy cooker, and tomorrow & Thursday I'm going to be working on Anna Barriball's wall drawing at the Fruitmarket... So an odd return to school which doesn't involve much returning to school... but back to the feedback...

I'm happy enough with how I've been graded. I've never really been one for putting too much stock into these things but never the less you can't help being affected at the time. Predictably my studio grades were higher than my theory ones and all the written feedback was generally positive and even complementary. I couldn't help being disappointed with my essay grade, given the obvious pain it caused me, but the effort I had put in was acknowledged and I had made an improvement on last semester so all in all I can't grumble. If anything this only supports my theory that I'm not a writer... have I mentioned that before?

I was a little more concerned with how my blog and seminar participation had been assessed. I don't disagree with the comments that I received but rather that I haven't been criticised on these things through the semester, only at the end... I feel that the blog has been assessed as a piece of writing.. or at least in a way that isn't really reflective of how I have been using it. It seems to me that if one is being asked to keep a blog which runs along side a practice, it should be assessed in a similar way, rather than at the end, retrospectively... This isn't really a problem for me, as I said already, grades aren't the issue... I think I just felt that I have valued this blog more than it has been officially credited.... Having said this, the grades weren't bad and the feedback was positive over all. I was happy to get a few reading suggestions thrown in to boot...

On the studio side all is good. The feedback I received echoed my own thoughts about how I should go forward this semester. Talking to Andrew is always useful, we discussed the need to move beyond the last thing and on to the next thing... 2012 is the year of the next thing, lol... He was fine with the fact that I have no idea as to what the next thing might be and went as far as to say that I should probably draw a line under other things for now, (more tape/standing work etc), and put all my energies into what might come next. These kind of unknowns are exciting... While it is a case of going back to the beginning and re questioning everything about how I should make work, I feel that over the course of the course I've been developing the right kind of 'tools' to do this... Isn't this what art practice is? constantly questioning what we think we know so as to do it better? This means there may be a hiatus on 'works' for now but I hope to get stuck in to some other things... the 1st year project spaces are coming up, there is also their fair project, and I haven't got chance to get involved with any of the undergrad crits like I did last year... all this and more to look forward to...

Cazart!

P.S.

so, no more standing on things... after this....
